Formerly known as Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, the Sultanpur National Park is a paradise for bird watchers. It houses around 250 species of local and migratory birds. The park is ideal for birding and a large flock of birds migrates here to pass the winters. Migratory birds come here from the far lands of Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia because of the cold temperatures, frozen lakes and snow-covered grounds in those regions.Every year more than 100 migratory bird species arrive at Sultanpur in search of feeding grounds and to pass the winter. Birds start migrating here from September. They rest here till March- April before flying away. Hence the best time to visit the park is between December and February. Efforts are made to plant more trees which are ideal and favorable for the birds and give them the right habitat to live.
The Sultanpur Jheel is as old as almost 100 years and since then it has been a habitat for various birds. The Jheel was given the status of a Sanctuary on 2nd April 1971 by the Punjab Wildlife Preservation Act, 1959. However, the park got the status of National Park on 5th July, under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
