Brief History of the Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Ajmer Sharif is the dargah of Gharib Nawaz Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. He was popularly known as Garib Nawaz, the Benefactor of the Poor. It was due his hospitality, kindness, and compassion towards the poor that he was endowed with this title.

The father and mother of Garib Nawaz belonged to the 13^th and 9^th generation respectively of the Imam Hassan. He was therefore directly related to the Prophet.

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the oldest and the biggest Dargah in the South Asia. Born in Chisti region of Afghanistan, Saint Moinuddin Chisti came to India to teach the mankind the way of living. He then settled in Ajmer and practiced the Sufi Sulh-e-Kulh that emphasized on Hindu-Muslim unity. Ajmer Sharif holds the pious grave of this great soul.
