The first seed of the National Gallery of Modern Art Museum (NGMA) was laid in 1949, but it was inaugurated by the then Vice President Dr. S Radhakrishnan in the year 1954. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was also there to witness of the same. Located near the India Gate it is under the administration of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.The building was a former residential palace of the Maharaja of Jaipur, hence known as Jaipur House. The museum has branches in Mumbai and Bangalore as well.

The gallery houses a wide and extravagant collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art curated by many talented Indian and International artists. The artist who contributed includes Thomas Daniell, Jacob Epstein, Rabindranath Tagore, Raja Ravi, Amrita Sher-Gil, Nandalal Bose and many other prominent personalities. The museum resonates the cultural ethos of the country. All artistic pieces have a unique value to it. There are also numerous treasures in some rooms of the places.

It is one of the largest modern art museum in the world in terms of the space of around 12000 square meters. The gallery houses more than 15000 paintings and other artistically rich pieces.The gallery also has a library which has periodicals, books, photographs and other material for a better understanding of the museum. The shop or the sales counter in the museum sells postcards, posters, and catalogs. As of today, the gallery has added facilities such as Art Restoration, Library and Art Documentation Centre, an auditorium, a preview theatre, conservation laboratory, a cafeteria and a shop.
